As per the guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the rate of interest payable by banks to depositors/claimants on unclaimed interest-bearing deposit amounts transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF) was earlier as per the Bank’s policy, calculated on a per annum basis at simple interest. Subsequently, the rate of interest has been reviewed and revised. Accordingly, with effect from 01 July 2018, the rate of interest payable on such deposits shall be as per the Bank’s policy, calculated on a per annum basis at simple interest. All claims settled by the Bank on or after 01 July 2018, in respect of unclaimed interest-bearing deposits transferred to the DEAF, shall carry interest as per the Bank’s policy, calculated on a per annum basis at simple interest, until further instructions from the RBI.
RBI vide its circular issued on March 21, 2014 has informed Banks of the establishment of the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014. As per the directive, the amount to the credit of any account in India with any bank which has not been operated upon for a period of ten years or any deposit or any amount remaining unclaimed for more than ten years has to be credited to the Fund, within a period of three months from the expiry of the said period of ten years.
As per RBI guidelines Banks have been advised that they should display the list of unclaimed deposits which are inactive / inoperative for ten years or more on their respective websites.
